301 redirect: internet server setting bringing in traffic from one website to another
 
404 errors: indicates that a file requested over the internet cannot be found

 

A
Alt Tag: describes pictures and other graphics when a particular internet browser isn’t set to allow image display
Anchor Text: text which users can click on to be redirected to another website; describes the content of the linked page
Affiliate Marketing: the promotion of online businesses using advertisements on another website; in return, the affiliate gets paid for the display of the ad
Affiliate Network: another company which tracks all transactions between online businesses and their affiliates
Affiliate Fraud: illegal activities done by repeating clicks on income-generating links
Ad Space: area on web pages designated for banner ads
Apache: open-source software on UNIX and Linux systems
Above the fold: parts of a web page that are physically seen
Auto-responders: automatic responses sent by email servers

Button ad: an ad on a webpage smaller than a banner
Back links: links leading to a particular page; increase web ranking
Bid management software: software used for management and reporting of search marketing campaigns
Black-hat SEO: unethical SEO practices of dodging search engine algorithms
Blog: a public platform which allows writers to post opinions and information online
Bounce rate: site visitors leaving the site after viewing just one page; expressed as a percentage
Brand misspellings: mistyping of brand names in search boxes or in address boxes
Bounce messages: undelivered emails
Bulk: spam messages

Contextual marketing: the placing of products and services right beside relevant content
CPC: cost-per-click: billing mechanism for online ads
CPL:  cost per lead
CPM: cost per thousand; based on the number of thousands of impressions from an ad
Cascading Style Sheet (CSS): HTML feature giving users and developers control over web page display
Cloaking: unethical practice of hiding content from users and search engines during certain times
Call to action: terms in marketing emails to encourage readers to do something
Click-through: clicking on links in marketing emails
Click-through rate (CTR): number of clicks for every 100 ad impressions
Commercial email: mails sent to advertise products
Cross-sell: recommending additional products to existing customers
Caching: storing of web files on computers for re-using
